When the next-generation Audi A4 sedan is introduced, the German automaker will for the first time offer a diesel variant for American consumers.
The new Audi A4 is set to arrive in America next year and the German automaker revealed that when it does, it will get a 2.0-liter TDI engine option. Audi is making a strong push into the diesel market, having revealed four more models that will be getting TDIs at last year’s LA Auto Show.

The decision to add more diesels to its lineup clearly comes from rising corporate average fuel economy standards, and with most automakers, diesel engines offer just that without sacrificing any torque.
Last year, Audi sold 35,415 units of its A4 and S4 sedans in the US, accounting for one of four Audis sold in the country (139,310 units total). Currently, Audi offers its TDI on the Q7 crossover and A3 hatchback in the United States, but will be adding it to its Q5, A6, A7 and A8 models. Unfortunately, the A4 won’t be getting the 3.0-liter TDI stating that sales would be too low to justify the investment. Instead, the automaker’s 2.0-liter TDI will be used.
